Punchmode was based by one of Hip Hop’s brightest creative person in the rap industry. S.B has been making music for atleast a decade and hasn’t been rewarded the attention he earned. With hits like “Suzuki Samurai,“ “I Don’t Need No Band” and “Jus U And Me“ it makes me ponder why he hasn’t got his respect in Hip Hop. The industry is wrong if they think that a deal is everything. Indie rappers are making a lot more currency than signed rappers. This is because indie emcee’s own all they’re songs . They don’t answer to no one but themselves. If you could build a fan base of fifty thousand ,what do you need a deal for? You could sell your Cd’s for three dollars and still make a cool net profit, not to mention the digital sells. Who needs to be signed if they are making $100,000 dollars independently every album. Don’t spend your money on websites saying they can get you a deal within 30 days and so on . rather, use that money to publicise your music career. Once you create enough noise, you won’t have to look for them labels will look for you. I think this is a common mistake for up and coming artist, these artist are looking for record deals. Let the labels look for you.
Independent music has it’s weaknesses just like major record labels . The good thing about independent music is most of the time you will get your dollars worth. i don’t mean the music you buy off the street in a jewel case with marker penning on it. I mean professionally wrapped Cd’s. If you were to buy a CD for ten dollars and it’s not professionally wrapped, then slap yourself, you have just been robbed. You shouldn’t pay no more than $5 dollars for unprofessional Cd’s and that’s if your feeling good that day. On the other hand, if the cd looks like it’s worth ten dollars then by all means buy it. Most likely the artist has put some time into his album. The problem with Major Labels is 3 good songs and the rest garbage. I’m tired of spending twelve- $15 dollars on Cd’s that aren’t worth ten cent. The only good song on the album, is the single they put out. If you are a signed artist, there should be 3 bad songs out of the 15, not vice versa. You get good quality audio frequency but, bad quality music, it’s time for a change.
